Soft Washing is the only cleaning method that has been approved by the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association for shingle roofs. Soft washing doesn’t just remove the algae from your sight, it kills it. They recommend using sodium hypochlorite (chlorine bleach) at a 50/50 ratio with water. A good industrial strength surfactant should also be added to the mix. Surfactants keep the mix wet for a longer period and hold it to the surface so that the chlorine has time to work.

There are three types of growth that appears on roofs in E. TN. The black streaks are commonly mistaken as mold or mildew. It is actually an algae called gloeocapsa magma. This algae is hard to kill because it protects itself with a dark pigmented sheath or coating. The colonies spread by airborne spores and from the wind and rain pulling it down the roof. “Black roof algae” is mostly cosmetic but it does slowly feed on the limestone granules found on shingles.

Moss and lichen are the other two types of algae. Both of these species are aggressive and can cause damage if left to grow. Usually found on the north side of roofs and under overhanging tree limbs, this algae thrives in cool and damp areas. The damages are usually caused by the growth pushing underneath shingles making it vulnerable to wind and leaks. They also hold moisture and divert water in the wrong directions.

We do more than just spray bleach all over the roof. Each roof is different and should be treated as such. Our cleaning mixture is made at different strengths according to the severity of the algae problem. We only use high grade chemicals and detergents that are biodegradable. Before you hire a company to clean a delicate and expensive surface such as your roof, ask plenty of questions.
