Soft Roof Cleaning – Maryville, Knoxville
Soft Washing is the only roof cleaning method that has been approved by the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association for shingle roofs. this method kills algae. Not just remove the algae from your sight. They recommend using sodium hypochlorite (chlorine bleach) at a 50/50 ratio with water. Also, a good industrial strength surfactant should be added to the mix. Surfactants keep the mix wet for a longer period and hold it to the surface so that the chlorine has time to work.
Whats Growing on your roof?
There are three types of growth that appears on roofs in E. TN. The black streaks are commonly mistaken as mold or mildew. Actually, it’s an algae called gloeocapsa magma. This algae is hard to kill. Because, it protects itself with a dark pigmented sheath or coating. The colonies spread by airborne spores. The wind and rain also helps pull it down the roof. “Black roof algae” is mostly cosmetic. But, it does slowly feed on the limestone granules found on shingles.
Moss and lichen are the other two types of algae. Both of these species are aggressive and can cause damage if left to grow. They are usually found on the north side of roofs and under overhanging tree limbs. These types of algae thrive in cool and damp areas. Their growth pushes underneath shingles, making them vulnerable to wind and leaks. This is why they’re so damaging. They also hold moisture and divert water in the wrong direction. After our roof cleaning is concluded, you will notice the moss and lichen have turned light brown. This means it’s dead and will fall off naturally with a few rains.
Our service is more than just spray bleach all over the roof. Each roof is different and should be treated as such. Our soft roof cleaning mixture is made at different strengths according to the severity of the algae problem. We only use high grade chemicals and detergents that are biodegradable.
